Why The Human Matters
What is a human being? Who is a human being? What does it even mean to BE human?
We are our own greatest mystery. Somehow both matter and immaterial, body and soul, flesh and spirit. We know more about the moon than we do the oceans depths. And yet, how much less do we even know the depths of ourselves. As Thomas Merton points out:
“What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery, and without it all the rest are not only useless but disastrous.”1
By trade, I traffic in financial questions (financial planner) and I’m deeply aware of the earthly matters of being human. But what I cannot fully grasp are the spiritual dimensions of our existence. Who are we?
In the The Human Matters we will…
Touch on the matters of being human: everyday problems, financial tips, and context for historical shifts, etc—the physical part of our existence.
And focus on why the human matters: everything from AI, to corporations, to politics seems to reduce humans. Even if a machine can replace your job, it can never touch the irreplaceableness of you—the spirit part.
Storms lie ahead. The next two decades look tumultuous and without context, it will be easy to give in to despair. But there is reason for hope. When you can place the present moment within the cycles of history, it will help you to stay in the still point of a turning world.
